The UNESCO World Heritage Day 2026
On 7 June 2026, we celebrate UNESCO World Heritage Day. Under the theme “Together for Peace and Understanding,” the German Commission for UNESCO and the Association of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany invite all 55 World Heritage Sites across Germany to take part in this nationwide celebration.
Visitors can look forward to hands-on activities, special guided tours and a wide range of events, including free tours, exhibitions, panel discussions, concerts, art projects, and interactive programmes for children and young people.
Our Annual Theme: Together for Peace and Understanding
With the 2026 theme, UNESCO World Heritage Day places the core mission of UNESCO at the forefront: promoting international understanding and safeguarding peace and security.
Germany’s World Heritage Sites make a vital contribution to advancing UNESCO’s ideas and goals. They are places of peaceful encounter, mutual understanding and respect for the diversity of cultural and natural heritage.
As the heritage of all humankind, World Heritage Sites form part of a global network. World Heritage in Germany does not belong only to people in or from Germany – it belongs to everyone, everywhere. Protecting and preserving this shared heritage is a collective responsibility that can only succeed through cooperation, dialogue, respect and peace.
On UNESCO World Heritage Day 2026, Germany’s World Heritage Sites will bring the guiding principles of both the World Heritage Convention and the UNESCO Constitution to life. Everyone is warmly invited to explore cultural and natural heritage together through special events such as guided tours, exhibitions, discussions, concerts, art projects and interactive activities for children and young people – and to experience them in an atmosphere of open and respectful exchange.
Experience World Heritage
UNESCO World Heritage Day offers a diverse, site-specific programme including special tours, exhibitions and information fairs. Visitors gain insight into what it truly means to be a World Heritage Site and the daily work and responsibilities involved in protecting and managing these exceptional places.
They also learn how the UNESCO World Heritage designation fosters a shared global commitment that transcends national, religious and cultural boundaries – rooted in international understanding, sustainability and peacebuilding.
Get Involved
The German Commission for UNESCO and the Association of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany call on all stakeholders, institutions and organisations connected to World Heritage Sites to take part in UNESCO World Heritage Day on 7 June 2026 with engaging on-site activities and digital offerings.
In line with this year’s theme, events are encouraged that highlight the role of World Heritage Sites as beacons for peace, dialogue and the values of UNESCO.
Possible guiding questions include:
- Why is your World Heritage site a special place for peaceful encounters?
- How do people of different backgrounds, religions and generations come together and form connections at your World Heritage site?
- How does your site foster awareness of respectful interaction between both young and elder visitors?
- What connects your site with other cultural and natural heritage sites worldwide?
- How does your World Heritage site build bridges to people in other regions of the world?
- How do you communicate respect for the diversity of global cultural and natural heritage?
- What messages of peace and international understanding emerge from your site or its community?
- Which projects or activities actively contribute to international understanding?
